Receiver Mecole Hardman is making his way back to the Kansas City Chiefs, signing a one-year deal with the team, as confirmed by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero.
Last season, the six-year veteran had a brief stint with the New York Jets after signing as a free agent. However, his performance in five games was disappointing, managing just one reception for six yards. The Jets then traded him back to the Chiefs, where he spent his first four NFL seasons, and he seamlessly reacclimated.
In six regular-season games with the Chiefs, Hardman caught 14 passes for 118 yards. He added seven receptions for 62 yards in the postseason, including a crucial touchdown in Super Bowl LVIII.
During the Super Bowl, Hardman’s three-yard touchdown catch from Patrick Mahomes secured an overtime victory and the Chiefs’ second consecutive championship. His 52-yard reception earlier in the game further showcased his impact, contributing to the Chiefs’ offensive success.
Selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft (No. 56 overall), Hardman has amassed 165 receptions for 2,206 yards and 16 touchdowns in 63 games (28 starts) for the Chiefs. With uncertainty surrounding the status of Rashee Rice, Hardman’s return provides a reliable option for Kansas City’s receiving corps.
Rice faces potential suspension from the NFL due to his involvement in a multi-car crash while racing a Lamborghini in northeast Dallas. Additionally, he is dealing with multiple felony charges related to the crash and a lawsuit from injured parties.
Despite adding free agent Marquise “Hollywood” Brown and drafting Xavier Worthy, the Chiefs recognize Hardman’s value as a proven pass-catcher familiar with head coach Andy Reid’s offensive system. Alongside Justin Watson, Kadarius Toney, and Skyy Moore, Hardman’s versatility may also extend to kick and punt returns, a role in which he excelled as a rookie, earning a Pro Bowl nod for his contributions.
