Russian Forces to Russian troops have claimed the capture of Kurakhove, a significant stronghold in eastern Ukraine, after a prolonged battle. The announcement by Russia’s Defense Ministry on Monday adds Kurakhove to the list of territories seized in the partially occupied Donetsk region during the nearly three-year conflict. Ukrainian authorities have yet to respond to this claim. This development follows a recent statement from the Russian Defense Ministry about a new offensive by Ukrainian forces in Russia’s Kursk border region. The upcoming inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump has introduced new uncertainties into the conflict, prompting both sides to solidify their positions ahead of potential peace talks. While Trump has not detailed his plans to end the fighting, his administration is expected to significantly influence the war’s trajectory. Kurakhove, a crucial position for the Ukrainian army on the eastern front, features an industrial zone, a thermal power plant, and a reservoir. The town, which had a prewar population of around 20,000, now has an estimated 7,000-10,000 residents remaining. It has endured relentless attacks from artillery, rocket launchers, guided bombs, and drones, leaving much of it in ruins. In recent months, Russia has been advancing westward in a costly effort to capture the entire Donetsk region. Ukrainian forces, facing a larger Russian army, are struggling to hold their ground. Russian troops are also attempting to encircle nearby Pokrovsk, a key logistical hub for the Ukrainian front line. In 2022, Russia illegally annexed the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, along with the southeastern provinces of Kherson and Zaporizhzhia. However, Russian forces do not fully control any of these areas. Ukraine is urgently seeking additional Western military aid, with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressing hope for more support during an upcoming meeting with Western partners in Germany. The Russian Defense Ministry reported on Sunday that Ukraine had launched a new offensive in the Kursk region. Military analysts estimate that Kyiv has recently lost 40% of the territory it gained in a rapid insurgency five months ago. While Russian officials claim to have repelled the Ukrainian advance, some Russian military bloggers suggest that Moscow’s forces are under significant pressure.
