The idea of the Golden State Warriors acquiring Jimmy Butler might seem appealing at first glance, but several factors make it unlikely. The Warriors have learned from past mistakes, such as the costly acquisition of Kelly Oubre Jr., and are cautious about making similar errors.

Despite their recent struggles, the Warriors are not desperate enough to ignore their collective instincts and intellect. According to league sources, the team was hesitant about adding Butler, even though the Miami Heat star expressed interest in joining Golden State. While Butler is a legitimate star who could complement Stephen Curry, his history raises significant concerns.

Golden State is wary of Butler’s age (35), his substantial salary ($48.8 million this season with a $52.4 million player option for next season), and his increasing unavailability due to various injuries. Butler missed 18 regular-season games in the 2022-23 season, 22 last season, and 12 of 32 games so far this season. This level of liability and uncertainty is too high a price for the Warriors.

Recently, Butler’s behavior has added to the concerns. He displayed indifference on the court and publicly expressed his desire to leave the Heat, leading to a seven-game suspension. “Through his actions and statements, he has shown he no longer wants to be part of this team. Jimmy Butler and his representative have indicated that they wish to be traded, therefore, we will listen to offers,” the Heat stated.

Butler’s reputation as an ultra-competitive player willing to push teammates and coaches seemed a good fit for Miami’s “Heat Culture,” established by team president Pat Riley and head coach Erik Spoelstra. However, his mercurial personality has led to strained relationships with his previous teams.

The Warriors, currently holding a 17-16 record, are exploring trade options that align with their locker-room culture, system, and payroll. Coach Steve Kerr emphasizes the importance of “fit” within the team. The memory of the Oubre acquisition, which doubled the team’s luxury tax bill and had minimal impact, still lingers.

Golden State is considering other trade options, such as Chicago’s Nikola Vučević, a skilled shooter but poor defender, and Atlanta’s Clint Capela, a strong defender but limited offensively. While these moves may not be as high-profile as acquiring Butler, they are more likely to align with the Warriors’ cautious approach.

As the Warriors continue to search for a suitable trade, they remain focused on finding a deal that makes sense for their roster and financial situation, avoiding the risks associated with Butler’s potential acquisition.
