In a surprising turn of events, USC’s standout offensive lineman Emmanuel Pregnon has decided to enter the transfer portal, just weeks after being celebrated for his return to the team. This decision comes shortly after the Trojans’ bowl game victory over Texas A&M.

New offensive line coach Zach Hanson had recently announced that Pregnon, a two-year starting left guard, would be returning to bolster USC’s young offensive line. However, Pregnon’s choice to transfer marks an unexpected shift, as he was initially expected to declare for the NFL draft after the 2024 season. His decision to accept an invite to the East-West Shrine Bowl further suggested his intention to go pro.

“I think he was just kind of weighing all his options,” Hanson said on December 18. “Guys that play well and have those opportunities obviously have to figure out what’s best for them.” Hanson had anticipated Pregnon’s return to improve his NFL draft prospects, but now faces the challenge of replacing three starting offensive linemen with limited experienced depth.

Pregnon’s departure is the fifth among USC’s offensive linemen since the season ended, and the 21st overall for the Trojans. His exit leaves a significant void in the roster, as the team prepares for the upcoming season with a thin interior line. USC has signed eight offensive linemen over the past two recruiting classes, but only a few have substantial playing experience. Kaylon Miller and Jack Susnjar, both preferred walk-ons, have just seven snaps between them.

Supporters of USC football will be closely watching how the team addresses this critical gap in their lineup. As the Trojans navigate these changes, the focus will be on developing the new recruits and ensuring the offensive line remains competitive.
