Ukraine Strikes Inside Russia Using U.S. Weapons Amid Escalating Tensions

Recent reports reveal that Ukraine has utilized U.S. weapons to conduct strikes inside Russian territory, as confirmed by a Western official familiar with the situation.

Under the newly approved guidance from President Joe Biden, American arms were authorized for use in striking inside Russia, specifically to defend Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

While the official preferred anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, it’s noted that Biden’s directive permits the use of U.S.-supplied weapons to target Russian forces engaged in or preparing for attacks. However, it does not alter the existing U.S. policy, which prohibits Ukraine from using American-provided ATACMS or long-range missiles for offensive strikes within Russia.

Requests from Ukrainian officials urging the U.S. to allow Kyiv’s forces to defend against attacks originating from Russian territory have intensified, particularly as Kharkiv faces heightened Russian aggression due to its proximity to the border.

The delay in the replenishment of U.S. military aid has been exploited by Russian forces advancing in the northeast Kharkiv region. Moreover, inadequate military production in Western Europe has impeded crucial deliveries of supplies to the Ukrainian battlefield.

White House national security spokesman John Kirby refrained from confirming Ukraine’s use of U.S. weapons in Russia, citing limited information on the specific targets. Kirby emphasized the tactical nature of such actions, highlighting the complex dynamics at play amid the ongoing conflict.
